How COVID-19 Pandemic Boosted the Sales of Dishwashers and Other Kitchen Appliances in Developing Countries

Jan 31, 2024

The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way people live, work, and eat around the world. With lockdowns, social distancing, and hygiene measures in place, many people have turned to cooking at home more often than before. This has led to an increased demand for kitchen appliances, especially dishwashers, in developing countries.

According to a report by Global Market Insights, the global dishwasher market size was valued at USD 39.7 billion in 2020 and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.8% from 2021 to 2027. The report attributes this growth to the rising awareness of the benefits of dishwashers, such as water and energy efficiency, time saving, and hygiene improvement.

The report also highlights the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the dishwasher market, stating that "the outbreak of COVID-19 has increased the demand for dishwashers in developing countries, such as India, China, Brazil, and Mexico, owing to the increased consumption of home-cooked food and the need to maintain cleanliness and hygiene in the kitchen."

In addition to dishwashers, other kitchen appliances, such as refrigerators, ovens, microwaves, and air fryers, have also seen a surge in sales in developing countries during the pandemic. According to a report by Research and Markets, the global kitchen appliances market size was valued at USD 237.3 billion in 2020 and is projected to reach USD 377.70 billion by 2027, registering a CAGR of 6.8% from 2020 to 2027. The report cites the factors such as "increased adoption of smart and energy-efficient kitchen appliances, rise in disposable income, change in lifestyle, and growth in the number of nuclear families" as the drivers of the market growth.

The COVID-19 pandemic has created new opportunities and challenges for the kitchen appliances industry, as consumers seek convenience, comfort, and safety in their homes. The industry players are expected to innovate and adapt to the changing consumer preferences and needs, as well as the environmental and social concerns, in order to sustain and grow in the post-pandemic world.
